What is Cavus Foot?
Cavus foot is also commonly referred to as a high-arched foot. As the name may suggest, this is a condition in which the foot has an abnormally high arch.
People who have cavus foot may experience a range of symptoms and pains including instability. This is due to additional pressure and weight being placed on the ball and heel of the foot when walking or standing.
Cavus foot can develop in one or both feet and at any age.

What Causes Cavus Foot?
There are a number of causes of cavus foot or a high arch, including genetics, underlying medical or neurological conditions, such as: cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and more.
What health issues are associated with cavus foot/high arch?
The most common issues related to cavus foot include pain, discomfort, and poor biomechanics. This can impact your posture and you may feel discomfort when walking or standing.
Other issues that may be related to cavus foot include:
- Calluses on the ball, heel, and toes,
- Hammertoes (toes that appear bent)
- Ankle instability
- Metatarsalgia (cramps and pain in the ball of the foot or feet)
- Musculoskeletal pain particularly in the lower back, hips and knees
High arches may make it a challenge to find shoes that fit properly, and you may also notice frequent wear on the outer heel or outer edge of your shoes.
Cavus Foot/High Arched Foot Treatment
We may be able to help in mild cases of cavus foot when the arch of the foot is not too severe. Custom-made orthotic devices may be used to address symptoms and to provide extra support.
You may also benefit from physical and manual therapies to help improve mobility, reduce pain and relieve pressure.
