Do I need a referral from my GP to see a chiropractor?
No, you do not need a referral from your GP or medical clinic to see a chiropractor. That’s because chiropractors in Australia are primary contact, primary healthcare practitioners.
However, if you’re eligible for Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan, your GP can refer you for up to 5 subsidised visits per year. These are detailed in the next section.
Chronic Disease Management (formerly Enhanced Primary Care or EPC) — GP services
An initiative through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) allows GPs to refer patients to allied healthcare practitioners (like chiropractors) as part of a Chronic Disease Management Plan.
Eligible patients can receive up to five (5) Medicare-subsidised visits per calendar year for allied health services, including chiropractic care.
Chronic health complaints
Chronic health complaints that may be addressed by chiropractic include a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Back pain
- Headaches
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Joint pain (knees, hips and more)
- Other aches and pains
Often these cases are addressed in a multidisciplinary way. Please refer to your GP on eligibility for chronic disease management or call our clinic for more information. Find out more about Chronic Disease Management Plans here: health.gov.au. Hopefully this information on chiropractor prices has been helpful.
How many visits will I need?
The number of visits varies based on your condition and treatment goals. Some people feel relief after one or two visits, while others benefit from ongoing care. Your chiropractor will discuss your treatment plan with you.
