Effective treatment and support for your body
Hi, I’m Dr. Matthew Alch (Chiropractor) and I’m your local Chiropractor.
At Sydney Spinal Care we’ll work with you to diagnose and treat scoliosis or to support you back to better function. There are different types of scoliosis, meaning there are different ways we can and can not help. A chiropractor for scoliosis may help you out in many ways, including:
Diagnosis to confirm whether you have a ‘clinical scoliosis’, or instead a more common sideways curving of the spine
Chiropractic adjustments to increase your movement around affected areas
Rehabilitation exercises and stretches, to help you build up strength to hold your body closer to proper alignment

What is Scoliosis?
It is common for many people to label their spinal concern as ‘scoliosis’. While a sideways curve in your spine may contribute to a range of musculoskeletal symptoms, it isn’t always a ‘clinical scoliosis’. Let’s discuss the difference.
Clinical Scoliosis
A clinical scoliosis can be technically diagnosed when the degree of spinal curve exceeds 12 degrees. Curvature of the spine to this degree is often associated with reduced biomechanics, observable twists in your back/posture, and symptoms of pain.
Structural Scoliosis
Structural scoliosis refers to a type of scoliosis where the shape of the spinal bones are wedged, or smaller on one side. This type of scoliosis can not be fixed by chiropractors or other manual therapies like osteopaths and physiotherapists, as we can’t change the physical shape of your bones. Rather, we can help to address some of the musculoskeletal symptoms associated with these conditions, including muscular tension and improving range of motion.
Functional Scoliosis
Functional scoliosis refers to a curve in your spine that can be helped by physical therapies. Any side curve in your spine (lateral curve) can be called a ‘scoliotic’ curve, however it is not ‘clinical scoliosis’. Chiropractors are most known for addressing these postural curves through adjustments, stretching and retraining some behaviours that have ‘locked into place’ postural curves over the years.
Scoliosis Treatment
Chiropractors may be able to help treat and address the symptoms of scoliosis and curvature of the spine through different techniques, including:
- Chiropractic adjustments and mobilisations
- Specific stretching
- Spinal traction
- Exercises that compliment your chiropractic adjustments
- Behaviour changes that seek to improve posture habits
Chiropractor for scoliosis in adults
As adults we have lived with scoliosis for most of our lives. This causes dysfunction of the spine as well as unbalanced muscles and tension around the spine. Treatment aims to reduce curvature, strengthen and release unbalanced muscles and reduce pain and stiffness associated with scoliosis.
Scoliosis treatment in children
Early detection of scoliosis is a must. The earlier it is detected the quicker it can be managed and reduced. Some large scoliosis found in adolescents may need to be referred to a specialist for bracing.
Scoliosis treatment exercises
Exercise is an important factor in treatment of scoliosis. Stretching as well as muscle strengthening will be given to help support and reduce curvature.
Scoliosis FAQs
Is a chiropractor good for scoliosis
You may be wondering “is a chiropractor good for scoliosis?” or “should I see a chiropractor for scoliosis?” Well, that depends on the type of spinal issue you have and if it is one a chiropractor can help with.
After an initial assessment of the curvature and symptoms we can determine if chiropractic is a suitable modality.
How often should you see a chiropractor for scoliosis
So how often should you see a chiropractor for scoliosis? This depends on the type, symptoms as well as health goals of the client.
Can a chiropractor fix scoliosis
Small scoliosis can be reduced and restored. Larger scoliosis can be reduced; it is more management of these curves to prevent further curvature from happening.
How is scoliosis diagnosed?
Scoliosis is usually confirmed through a physical examination using orthopedic tests, such as the Adams test, where the patient bends forward with straight legs and arms hanging down so the doctor can observe the ribs and spine. An X-ray, spinal radiograph, CT scan, or MRI can also be performed to confirm scoliosis. The curve is measured using the Cobb method and is diagnosed in terms of severity by the number of degrees.
Can scoliosis be prevented?
The short answer is that scoliosis cannot be prevented. It does not develop due to bad posture or carrying heavy backpacks. However, ensuring that your children have regular checkups with their doctor can help detect and manage the condition early.
What exercises are beneficial for individuals with scoliosis?
One common myth regarding scoliosis is that you need to avoid any kind of physical activity. On the contrary, the more physically active you are, the less likely is for you to experience the pain. Scoliosis cannot be corrected permanently without surgery. However, exercise can help prevent its worsening.
In mild cases, specific exercises and stretches can help individuals manage scoliosis and potentially prevent the need for surgery. However, it is important for anyone with scoliosis to consult a healthcare professional or physical therapist before starting any exercises or stretches. They can suggest personalised exercises tailored to the individual’s needs.
The optimal scoliosis exercises depend on the location of the scoliosis curve. Healthcare professionals may recommend the following exercises and stretches for individuals with scoliosis.
